Questions & Answers

Q: What is the correct way to brush teeth?

A: Brushing regularly, for two minutes, twice a day, is an important part of oral health care. When selecting a toothbrush to buy, look for one with a small-head and a handle that's comfortable to grip. Here are some tips for effective brushing:

Be gentle - Rough brushing and shaggy toothbrushes can damage tooth enamel.

Be methodical - A routine will help ensure you clean every corner of your mouth every time you brush. For example, start with the outer surfaces of your lower teeth, work from the back teeth to the front and then head to the inner surfaces. Finally, brush all the biting surfaces.

Pay special attention to the area where the teeth meet gums - Be especially careful to brush away plaque from the area around the gums and in the gaps between teeth. Combined with regular flossing, this will help you control plaque build-up.

Brush at an angle to the gums - Brush in a circular or elliptical fashion. Using a back and forth motion can risk making the root surface tender and wearing down the gum line.

Q: Which Macleans Whitening toothpaste should I choose?

A: Macleans makes 3 different whitening toothpastes; Whitening, Ice Whitening and White & Shine. All 3 whitening toothpastes help restore your teeth's natural whiteness, without bleaching agents.

Macleans Whitening, our original whitening product, was the UK's first mainstream whitening toothpaste. Ice Whitening is a gel which has been formulated to also leave your mouth feeling fresh. White & Shine is the latest addition to the range and has been specially formulated to clean and polish, leaving teeth whiter and so smooth they shine.

Each product has a different flavour so we recommend you use the product that you most enjoy using.

We do not recommend that children under 7 years use whitening toothpastes.

Q: Why do teeth become sensitive?

A:The primary causes of sensitive teeth involve receding gums and damage to the protective layer of tooth enamel. Some of the common reasons this happens include bad brushing, grinding your teeth as a result of stress, and acidic diet.

The Sensodyne range of oral care products, also made by GlaxoSmithKline, has been specially formulated for people with sensitive teeth.
